| greening your mail |
[Jan. 17th, 2009|04:24 pm] |
My husband has been working on a project called eco-wisdom. There is a discussion forum there http://www.eco-wisdom.com/discuss/ that is a great way to contribute information that you may have as well as learn from others. I am "Colibri" there.
I also created a social group there called "Green Artists". I just posted a little something about how to green your mail. A lot of us ship our work all over the place and shipping and handling really adds up. That is actually a big huge bulk of my expenses every year. Anyway, go check out what I wrote- it saves money and it is nice to be able to make greener choices whenever we can!
Join up too if you want!
Edit: just noticed that you can't access the social group "Green Artists" unless you're a member. oops. I'll see if that can be changed. |

| sewing machine |
[Dec. 18th, 2008|12:52 pm] |
my sisters and I want to get a sewing machine for my mom for her birthday which is in January. I really don't know anything about sewing machines and neither do my sisters, so I thought i'd ask here if anyone had any suggestions.
Something simple, not with a computer or anything too technological. (My mom still can't ever remember how to check her voicemail on her cellphone no matter how many times I show her.)
Thanks! |

[Nov. 25th, 2008|06:39 pm] |
I am honored to be part of one of Tracy Helgeson's creations, The Fine Art Department blog.
Tracy has gathered up 25 artists to help each other spread the work about our artwork during these tough economic times. You can read more about her idea here.
So buy art and do your part to save our economy!
Online, I sell my work at amanobooks.com and also at my bgmills etsy shop. Work on my web site guerzonmills.com is also available unless it is marked as sold. My web site is usually the last to be updated with new work though...putting that on the top of my to-do list. |

| chicago art stores |
[Aug. 28th, 2008|07:40 pm] |
hey chicago people,
What art supply stores do you go to?
I went to Lakeview Art Supply store today becuase I needed some turpenoid as well as some other stuff for oil painting. I was disappointed with the prices and the selection.
I remember there being a Utrecht down by the Art Institute. But that seems like a pain in the ass to go to and park, etc.
help!
Edit: I just found a Dick Blick that's actually not that far from me. I wonder if it's any good though. hmmm. |

| Embracing Encaustic |
[May. 28th, 2008|11:08 am] |
Yesterday afternoon I received my contributor's copy of Linda Womack's book Embracing Encaustic. Linda was so kind to include two of my encaustic pieces in this revised 2nd edition. I have not had a chance yet to sit still and read through it all, but I have flipped through the pages and the photos are wonderful.

There are about 25 artists featured in the book with information on how their featured piece was created. I can't wait to read it and be inspired to try some new techniques. I already feel inspired by just looking at the photos.
I believe Linda is planning a few book release parties in Portland, Oregon as well as one in Beverly, Massachusetts during the IEA (International Encaustics Artists) Conference. I so wish I were going to that. Maybe next year.
This is one my encaustic paintings that was chosen for the book:
creve coeur, mixed media and encaustic, 6x6 inches
This painting will be hanging at Greener Lifestyles for the June artwalk coming up in Ballard. |

embrace, encaustic on birch 6x6 inches
It's been a while since I posted here and I miss it actually. There's so much going on that I have been blogging about my artwork over at my blog. I was sick for almost 2 months with pneumonia, plus traveling back and forth from seattle to chicago, plus taking care of a very active toddler, plus packing, plus trying to still enjoy life and not stress too much about all the changes.
So...we're moving to Chicago in July. I am really excited for the new adventure, but also sad. I love Seattle, I love the Pacific Northwest, I love my neighborhood, I love my house...But it's time for us to go back. I am really looking forward to being closer to my sisters and my mom. I miss them more and more everyday. Although I will still have to fly to see them. But the trips will be more frequent now as a 2 hour flight is nothing now after having lived on the West Coast.
Noah is walking, running, talking. He is one active little dude. It's a lot of fun. But exhausting too!
Anyway. There's something odd about LJ where it's hard to jump back in once there has been an absence. Even if I'm not posting, I am here reading up on everyone. But that doesn't seem fair- to read and comment and not post myself. I wish I had more time. Time, time, time. If I had more time, I would just waste it on the computer!! gah! |

| Moments of Quiet and Stillness |
[Apr. 1st, 2008|08:09 pm] |
endlessness, mixed media and encaustic on birch 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches
Text reads: i love the endlessness of it all
"Moments of Quiet and Stillness" is what I named my current show that I hung up at Cugini's Cafe in Ballard today. The encaustic piece above is one of the paintings included in the show. I wish I had brought my camera with me to take a picture of the paintings hanging.
I had to wait until late afternoon to hang because I had to wait until my husband came home from work so that he could take care of Noah. When I finally got there after lugging my ladder to the coffeeshop from my car, I looked up at the walls and at the height of the moulding that I was to hang the paintings from, and my stomach sank. I knew there was no way that my less than 5 foot body would reach it even with the big ladder that I brought from home. I called my husband frantically and told him my situation. He and Noah came to my rescue! Am I lucky or what to have a superhero for a partner? On a tall ladder and stretching his 6 foot 1 inch body, he was able to string the wires for me. Noah watched our activities and was so good the whole time! It took him about half an hour and then they left. I spent the rest of the time hanging and straightening and putting the labels up. I was there for almost two hours!! It shouldn't have taken that long, but the shaky beginning really added the extra time.
But in the end, I stepped back and felt proud of my work. It really felt good to see a body of work hanging nicely on the wall. In the end I hung up 14 paintings.
The show will be up through April at Cugini Cafe, 5306 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107.
Now I need to go pack...going out to Chicago again tomorrow. |

| Women In Wax |
[Feb. 29th, 2008|08:58 am] |
I was invited by my friend Karon Leigh to participate in a group show called "Women in Wax" at the exPRESSive Arts Studio and Gallery in Everett, Washington. She just emailed the bunch of us that our show made the headline in the Visual Arts of the A&E for the Everett paper, The Herald. The show runs from March 1st-March 31st. The opening will be held Friday, March 7th, 2008 from 6-9 pm.
Origins, encaustic and mixed media, 10x10 inches
She said she got a call from the PI too, so something might be in there next week. ! |

| plaster |
[Feb. 23rd, 2008|09:49 am] |
Yesterday I went out to Trish Seggebruch's studio again, but this time it was for a workshop with Stephanie Lee on how to use plaster in mixed media works. I'm hooked!
Actually, plaster works much like molding paste and other specialty Golden products...except it's way cheaper. One of the new things that I learned about that I'm excited about incorporating into my work is the use of plaster gauze. I am also itching to get into my studio and add encaustic on top of finished plaster pieces. As of right now I don't have any finished plaster pieces and I don't know when my next chance to get into the studio will be.
 work in progress, 5x7 inches
This is a piece that is still in progess. I had brought with me several panels that I had started over the year that have been sitting in my studio. I had felt stuck with them, so I thought that I would just bring them along to experiment with. I can't wait to work more on the other panels that I started yesterday. |

| open studio! |
[Feb. 8th, 2008|12:10 pm] |
Hey Seattle people,
I'm actually 99% positive that I'm going to open up my studio for the Ballard Art Walk tomorrow, Saturday, February 9th. This morning I was 10% positive that I was going to be able to do it. But after Noah and I got back from one of my doctor's appointments, he played very nicely by himself in his playroom, while I got some of the backend work done. Thanks buddy!
memories to hold me, encaustic and mixed media, 6x6 inches
So, if you're in the area and want to visit me in my tiny studio, please stop by!
My studio is located at 5308 Ballard Avenue in Seattle. The Ballard Art Walk takes place from 6:00-9:00 pm. My studio is located above Cugini's Cafe. The entrance is through the door of an old brick building. The door is between of Cugini's and the Divino Wine Bar. Just go up the staircase and my studio is to the right of the stairs. Studio #16. |

| check it out! |
[Feb. 4th, 2008|09:44 am] |

My blog was featured in Somerset Studio's latest issue of the Artful Blogging Magazine! In my article I talked about starting my blogging journey here on Live Journal. I don't think I would have stuck with this whole blogging thing if I hadn't met all you wonderful, supportive and creative people out there on my friends list. I got sucked into the blogging world here.
Please excuse my dirty scanner bed, I wanted to take a picture to share here, but my camera batteries are running low. |

| first art of 2008 |
[Jan. 3rd, 2008|02:18 pm] |
I got to go to the studio today. My first piece of art for 2008:
creve coeur, encaustic and mixed media on cradled birch, 6x6 inches
Creve Coeur means "broken heart" in French and is the name of a lake that we lived near when we lived in Missouri. Getting Foggy and taking walks by this lake were the only good things that came out of that year and a half in St. Louis. Well, that's not entirely true, but those are the highlights!
When I left the studio today I stopped in at the coffeshop below to talk to the landlady about my lease. I had this painting in my hand as I take my paintings home when they are done. She really liked it and offered me a show in the coffeshop (she also owns Cugini's, the coffeeshop). yippee! Not sure when though. We're going to meet up again to go over more paperwork for the studio and to show her more of my work. Hopefully the show would be in a few months. There's a lot of wall space there and while I am interested in showing my work this year, I am definitely taking a step back from the stress of last year.
I'm excited about the opportunity though. |
